3 Simple Self-Storage Decluttering Ideas
There’s nothing more intimidating than facing the task of organizing your home. There are also few things more rewarding than a well-organized and uncluttered living space. But what do you do with the things you don’t need right now but also don’t want to give up? Self-storage!

Start Small
When you look at your entire home and think of all the things you own, organizing can seem nearly impossible. Instead, start small.
Try organizing one room — or even one drawer or closet — at a time.
Some people find it easiest to start with the most cluttered areas of the house, areas where items are commonly stored like the attic, garage or spare room. It’s easy to get off track or distracted by other needs in various parts of the house. Stay focused and completely finish organizing one room before moving to the next.
Sort and Say Goodbye
Once you’ve selected the first room to declutter, it’s time to sort.
The Marie Kondo storage method, or KonMari method, is a popular way to sort and organize. It recommends you place items into one of five categories:
- Clothes
- Books
- Papers
- Komono (Miscellaneous Items)
- Sentimental Items
Once you have sorted, go through the items in each category. For each item, ask yourself if it sparks joy. It can also be helpful to ask yourself when the last time you used the item was.
If you don’t use the item and it doesn’t bring you joy, it’s time to thank it for its service and say goodbye. Donate these items to a secondhand store and know that someone else will enjoy them.
If the item brings you joy and you use it often, find a place to store it in the room.
If the item brings you joy but you don’t use it frequently, it may be a great candidate for self-storage.
However you sort your items, don’t forget to label. If items are in boxes, make sure you can easily read what is inside the box and its destination (storage, donation or a location in your home) without having to open the box.
Store What’s Left and Enjoy Your Space
Self-storage is the perfect option when you simply don’t have enough space. It frees up the areas of your home to be more fully enjoyed and allows you to be more organized in your everyday living.
Items like holiday decorations, out-of-season clothing, recreational vehicles, boats, camping supplies and more can all be kept safe and out of sight in a storage unit.
